ramblings of an optomistic spirit

shades of green

It's blowing a gale outside, I sit snuggled by the log burner and dream.

I love gardens and gardening, infact I was a landscape gardener when I lived in Ireland.

My gardens over the years....... my first was a tiny cottage garden,my second a suburban regular square garden, my third half an acre on the coast, my fourth a steep terraced garden and now.....

My present garden is on two levels, by the sea, we live near an old slate quarry so there are lots of slate retaining walls, we have an old byre with the old sluice, a stream and a spring. We have lived here for about 10 months and with lots to do inside the garden is further down the list. It rains alot here in the highlands and we get some wild harsh weather so this garden will have its challenges.

But I dream and plan.

I would love to do something like this

I  love rambling roses, clematis, verbena bonaranis, aquilegia, snakeshead fritillary, love in the mist,poppies.... and lots lots more. So hang around and see the journey me and our garden will take this year.
What are your favourite plants or flowers ?

  1. Sounds like a lovely plan. Having lots of slate to work with would be fabulous. Love all the flowers you mention but never grown fritillaries. I doesn't get cold enough here!

    1. I love the seasons, but right now hearing you say it doesn't get cold enough is a tad appealing :-)

I just realized why I like you - I read the part at the top of your blog - "an optimistic spirit". I love optimism.

  3. I am a vegetable and fruit gardener. GiGi plants a lot of flowers and herbs in her garden (we have seperate gardens). We each like doing our own thing. Of course we help each other out at times. My sister plants many different flower gardens in her yard. I'm sure she is familiar with the ones you mention.
How long is your growing season?

    1. I am a vegtable grower too but up here in the north my choice is limited, this year I grew fennel ( I love fennel especially roasted ) sprouts, purple sprouting brocoli, onions and salad, sadly the snails and slugs got more than us. I love herbs too and grow lots in pots. Our growing season is minimal and very very seasonal I hope to have colour in my garden from maybe June - September.
Seperate gardens what a great idea, I have mine all to myself Andy happy to leave me to it.

  6. Hi Annie,
It will be wonderful to see your new garden taking place and watching your progress. It must have been wonderful being a landscape gardener in Ireland. Your list of favourite plants includes most of mine too but would also add sweet peas and tulips and geraniums.
